Hugh McShane b.1868 and Teresa McLaughlin

Hugh McShane was born 3 June 1868 to Bernard McShane (52) and Mary O'Neill (74). To date little is known of his history, other than the fact that he is buried in a grave plot registered to Charles McShane. To date we have been unable to find details of the location of the grave. My grandfather had a note book and in this book were details of the grave owned by Charles McShane as follows:-

  • John McShane 29-7-02, 57 years
  • Hugh McShane 10-3-06 38 years
  • Annie O'Hare 26-4-1915, 6 years
  • Winifred O'Hare 28-8-1915 14 years
  • Alex O'Hare 21-4-1916, 4Years, 10 months
  • Annie O'Hare 26-6-1916 40 Years
  • Catherine McShane 14-4-1918 71 years
  • Daniel McShane 23-4-1919 48 Years

The details of the parties above have proved to be a bit of a mystery to date. The grave is not located in either the Belfast City Cemetery or Millfield. Was John McShane Hugh's brother? What is the O'Hare Connection?

Can you provide any details on this or other McShane's - please contact us.

At present we are trying to find relatives of the different children above.

We have little details on Teresa McLaughlin so if you can help let us know. If Hugh was deceased in 1906 then we correctly cannot find him in the 1911 census. We have however found details of a widow, Teresa McShane, aged 54 (born c.1866) who travelled to New York leaving Liverpool on 9th October 1920. Family reports suggested that Teresa McShane (14) married a Mr Fegan. The Widowed Teresa McShane on this voyage travelled with a Child called Mary, Teresa Fegan as a relative and a Hugh Morris McShane aged 21, 4mnths, which ties in with Hugh (15) being born around 1899. As such it would appear that Teresa (10), Hugh (15) and Teresa's grand-daughter travelled to New York in 1920.

The Passenger List reveals that Teresa was visting her son, Thomas McShane (7) and that Hugh (15) was visiting his brother. This all ties in with the Family Information above.

Therefore we can check that Teresa McShane (14) was married to W.M.Fegan of 16 Grand Place, Waltham, Maas. The details for Mary Teresa Fegan show that although only 7 that she had been in America between 1914-1920 but she was still recorded as being born in Ireland. She must have left at a very young age.

In relation to Hugh(15) and Teresa(10) they are both reported as being in USA between 1915-June 1920. Why did they return to Ireland for such a short period, was there a family death or wedding?
